Most of the itinerary proposed by IH was in place except the Day 6, where we have to cut short our journey from Sabargram to Gorkhey. We did not go to Phalut as the view was not clear because of the bad weather. We missed the sleeping Buddha and Clear view of Makalu, Lohte and Everest.

8th April – Hyderabad to Kolkatta

Four of us, me and my 3 MBA classmates (Dilshaad, Sayantan and Kaushik) took a flight at 6 :15 am from Hyderabad to Kolkatta and reached at 8:15 am. I decided to visit Dakshineshwar Kali temple and rest of them went to Sayantan’s parents’ home in Kolkatta. I took an Uber and reached temple in half an hour. It was a very nice temple with a systematic que system in place to visit the goddess. I spent an hour to get my turn, later took another cab, and reached Sayantan’s parents home. Aunty fed me with a nice breakfast and later in afternoon; we all had a lavish traditional Bengali food prepared by aunty. We had Sukto (typical Bengali dish), Bhaat, Fish curry, Prawn curry, Parwal curry, potato curry and Mishthi Dohi (a fav dish of all Bengali’s). Last but not the least Rasogulla, it was a feast in Lunch. Later she packed Chikcken curry and Jeera rice for dinner for four of us. We all started from their house to reach station to catch our HUMSAFAR J it is the name of the train we travelled from Howrah station to New Jalpaiguri. Train was 2 hours late and after we boarded it was 3 hours late so we reached our destination at 7:30 am instead of 4:30 am.

9th April 2017 - Day 1: Getting to base camp –  Jaubhari. Pick up from NJP at 9:30 AM. The travel time to Jaubhari is 4-5 hours.

Sumo cars arranged by Indiahikes picked us at 9:45 am from NJP station. Two cars with 11 people started for a 4- 5 hour journey. In between, we stopped at Mirik Lake for Lunch and later were dropped off at first camp Jaubhari at around 3:45 pm. We checked into our rooms and got introduced to our trek organisers, their team and rest 19 trekers. Information about the trek and health & safety was discussed. BP and oxygen levels was monitored and were issued health card to monitor daily. We had dinner and slept early. Let me introduce other trekkers of my batch.

Me and nature

Apart from IH crew we were 23- Me from Hyderabad, My MBA mates from Hyderabad – Dilshaad, sayantan and Kaushik, Vidya ji from Goa, Shri sir from Bangalore, Bindu from Gurgoan, Mythili from Chandigarh, Anu from Mumbai, Lavanya from Hyderabad, Rakesh GP from Hyderabad Raakesh Ramesh from Bangalore, Vinay from Devanhalli,  Poojan from Bangalore, Vijay from Hyderabad, Surya from Hyderabad, Rohit from Kolkatta, Sheetal from Mumbai, Dorina from Mumbai, Mrinmoy from Kolkatta, Dripto from Kolkatta, Simanthini from Dehradun and Sandeep from Bangalore.

India Hikes team - Buddha ji(our trek guide), Abhirup (our trek leader) and Sanjeev (our trek sweeper, who make sure that all 23 of us reached safely to the destination). Jhum Jhum was the code Buddha ji use to call us to start and we have to respond Yella yella but we ended up saying cala cala J.

I totally agree with this quote –

“It’s always further than it looks. It’s always taller than it looks. And it’s always harder than it looks.” (the three rules of mountaineering)and beautiful sceneries.

Journey started with straight road to hilly mountains, trails. Every day was mystery whether we will ascend or descend the mountain, trust me both are hard in their own style. While ascending your lungs speak with you loudly and while descending your knees curse you for going on the trek. Initially I assumed that 11 kms or 6 kms is a easy distance which can be covered in 6 hours but once I started trekking understood it was not an easy affair. I literally huffed and puffed at every 3 steps while ascending the uphill and the pain was worse in my knees while descending. For the first time I realise that walking 1km in this trek was sometimes walking 10km or more.

10th April 2017 - Day 2: Jaubhari (7,000 ft) to Tumling (10,128 ft); 11 km, 6-7 hours

For the day 1 trek - I woke up at 5 am to see the sunrise. During my entire trek I woke up early to watch sunrise before 5:30 am. We all finished our breakfast and couple of us offloaded our backpacks. Offloading is an option in which you can drop our heavy backpack at the base camp and horses will carry them for you to all destinations.

Most enthusiastic day of the trek where novice like me are excited about the entire trek fun. Unware of the difficulty, thoughts wandering in mind with high expectations from the trek starting from sunrise to sunset, watching birds, Rhododendrons, red Panda and what not. The entire trail was up and down with mostly rocky road. We had short breaks to recover the tiredness and again walk on the trail during which we use to munch snacks. We had a Lunch break and chai break every day during our trek. Somehow, we all dragged to the first destination Tumling. After checking into our rooms, the best part after finishing every trek was to do stretching with Abhirup. Later we had our tea, soup time and dinner.
All set for the trek !

11th April 2017 - Day 3: Tumling (10,128 ft) to Kalipokhri (10,400 ft); 11 km, 7 hours

Woke up at 5 again to view the sunrise. I watched sunrise from the front side of our homestay and as the sunrays started coming up the view of Kanchenuganga range became clearer. Sleeping Buddha was not very clear but able to see the White Mountain made my day. It was mesmerizing to watch it while sipping my morning tea. We all had breakfast and started our route to Kaliphokri. We walked through the Singalia National park; we were hoping a few wild animals to be spot including Red Panda but unfortunately we could not see any. We keep walking the ascending and descending trails, I swear I do not even dare to count them. We walked further post lunch to reach Kalipokhri before Lunch. We reached the destination and checked into our new homestays for the night. Regular oximeter check-up, stretching and dinner were like daily rituals. After asking my trek leader, I took Combiflam tablet, as my legs were paining badly. However, that was the first and the last pill I took for the entire trip. I appreciate Abhirup for constantly discouraging to take medicine. We had some fun chat and took rest at night in our rooms.

12th April 2017 - Day 4: Kalipokhri (10,400 ft) to Sandakphu (11,929 ft); 6 km, 3 hours

Day began with beautiful sunrise and we started our day with Jhum Jhum slogan by Buddha ji. This was a quite a windy day with slight chilly waves. The entire trail was ascending so we walked very slowly and few trails were very narrow where I felt just to save myself by not tripping over or slipping. I forgot that I want to see the flowers and beautiful valleys, it was just me and my concentration to walk carefully. We took approx. 4 hours to reach Sandakphu. We had a little free time to roam around if interested, but I was confined to the canteen room as they have fire and cozy place to stay away from cold. Another excitement or say fear was to sleep in tents. They gave sleeping bags and sleeping liners to sleep inside the tent. It was chilly outside but my 3 layers of clothing and sleeping liner saved me from the cold. First experience of sleeping inside the tent with sleeping bag and liners.

13th April 2017 - Day 5: Sandakphu (11,929 ft) to Sabargram (11,807 ft); 14 km, 6 hours

Next day morning, I woke up little late for sunrise as it was cold and I could not sleep well inside the bag. We all had our breakfast and headed to our next destination. Today it was little longer distance as the trail was more flat than ascend or descend. Weather was cloudy and windy so had our warmers on while walking. As our trek started climate kept changing. After couple of hours it started with drops of water, which turn later into small ice balls (ole in Hindi) and once we reached our camp Sabargram it snowed. Snow covered the entire field, lovely view but chilly weather. We geared up with extra layer of clothing’s and warmers and started playing in Snow. It was an hour fun and later we ended up sitting in a cozy room to finish our tea, snacks, soup and dinner. It was a scary night for me as I was preparing mentally that I have to sleep in tent in this snowy weather. Somehow, I fall asleep and I was happy to wake up without any problem. Tent nights were over J

14th April 2017 - Day 6: Sabargram (11,807 ft) to Gorkhey (7,546 ft) via Phalut; 17 km, 6 hours

We started half an hour late as the weather was cloudy and we decided not to go Phalut and instead go to Gorkhey directly. We walked through a beautiful bamboo forest for almost entire trail. We reached beautiful Gorkhey village in 4 hours. This was the most pleasing environment with many beautiful houses and landscape. In between, we passed water canals too. This was the last night with the entire gang. After checking in homestay, we all wandered in this beautiful village with full of colourful flowers, beautiful houses and came back for dinner. This was the special dinner because we could order chicken curry separately with the regular daal, chaawal and sabji. After dinner, we had a bonfire with musical night. We all sang songs and spent our last chilly night in bonfire along with IH team. It was fun. On the top Abhirup and IH team gave us the certificate of Accomplishment for finishing the trek successfully.

Route to Gorkhey

15th April 2017 - Day 7: Gorkhey (7,546 ft) to Sepi (6,234 ft); 15 km, 5 hours.

This was  the last morning of the trek with the group and after breakfast we all started little early as many of us has to catch trains and flights from either Darjelling or NJP (New Jalpaiguri). We took 5 hours to reach sepi for our last stop. We had lunch and said good-bye to rest of the trek members. Me, Kaushik, Dilshaad, Sayantan and Abhirup took a cab to NJP. Abhirup got down at Jaubhari (1st base camp) and we went further to NJP. We reached around 8:30 pm to Siliguri, went to Kaushik’s grandmother’s house, and took some rest. I got to chance to have again a Bengali food with delicious fish curry.  We started at around 12:30 pm to station as our train was at 2:45 pm. The moment we reached to station, we came to know that our train was initially 30 min late and it prolonged further. It came at early morning 4 am. It was 4 hours delayed which also affected our plan to visit Sayantan’’s house in Kolkatta on our way back. We got down at New Jalpaiguri station at 4:30 pm on 16th April and rushed to Airport, as we have to catch our flight at 7 pm. Finally we made it and was back to Hyderabad home by 11 pm and had a most awaited shower.

“My journey for this trek began with fearful thoughts wandering “How will I stay so many days disconnected with my family but my journey ended with these thoughts J - why I was not connected to nature and mountains earlier”.

In midway of the trek I wasn’t worried about the flowers or the animals instead I was worried about me and my life. A small wrong step or slip can throw me down in the bushes. Whenever it was steep corner I just said to myself be brave and cross the danger. Dedication, discipline and endurance are the key points for the success of any trek.

Inspired by nature jotted down few lines of poem, I use to write in college days, now again after 15 years :)

Feb & March 2017 – Club run, Volunteering for VI in Pinkathon and 30 kms cycling with Hyderabad Bicycling club

Club run - 19 Feb 2017

My wish to run inside the HCU campus was fulfilled at the Hyderabad Club run organised by Hyderabad runners club on 19th Feb 2017. I missed the campus club run in 2015 because of my weekend MBA classes and always want to attend the event inside my University (HCU) campus. I planned to finish my 10 km run in 1 hour 15 min to qualify for SCMM, but I could not, instead finished my walk/run at 1 hour 39 min. I was down with bad cough and throat infection and was feeling uneasy to run or jog a lot so decided to walk. Vandana, my neighbour, friend and motivator was also down with throat infection, cough, and decided not to run. Upon my request, she joined me just to support me throughout the run without caring about her timing. We ran couple of times in between our brisk walk and finished the race. Main target was to complete the run without having any discomfort. It was a nice atmosphere with many known faces from campus and Hyderabad runners club and finally I was happy to see my cousin’s husband Hemanth and couple of my MBA classmates (Dilshaad, Rahul, Niha and Kaushik) at the finish point.

Learning: If you have a wish, do your best to full fill it, no matter what trouble comes on your way or what time you took to finish it. What matters is your accomplishment.

Volunteering for Visually Impaired (VI) girls – 26th Feb 2017

A week later, I decided to volunteer for Visually Impaired (VI) girls at the Hyderabad Pinkathon on 26th Feb 2017. I tied up to go with a group of runners from my township on 26th morning at 4 am. I slept at 11 :30 pm and checked time twice at 2 am and 3 am and overslept past 3 :45 am. Suddenly got a call from Ashish (my neighbour) asking if I am ready to leave with them and it was 4 am, I realised I was still sleeping and rushed to join them in literally 3 min. we all reached the venue at 4:45 am and I was much ahead of my reporting time 5:30 am at the venue. I met couple of the organisers for the VI group and waited to get my run partner. These Visually Impaired kids are from Devnar School for the Blind. I ran with them last year in pinkathon too. These kids are amazing with high spirits. Most of them are completely blind and couple of them are partially but no one can beat their will power. However, loved their innocence, purity and zeal to do whatever they can. I saw each one of them coming out of their comfort zone and pushing hard to do something exciting for their life. It was just amazing no words to describe, it can be just felt. My run partner & I, Vennela (She was in her 10th class and loves Telugu and Science. She cannot see with both her eyes but was having a sweet voice and strong determination to study hard) finished our race at 7: 45 am i.e., in 35 min. Later we picked our medals and breakfast. I and the other volunteers handed over their run partners to their schoolteachers. However, the worst part of the event was The VI girls wait until late in harsh sun and ran last after all (10km, 5km and 3 km run) categories left. It was hard to take them in such a huge crowd and make them run, because when these kids run they do not know who is in front of them and we cannot make everyone to move aside fast. I felt that they should not be made run in such a huge crowd where there is a big scope of falling down by colliding each other. I hope it they will consider this next year. However, I am happy to be part of the volunteering and vennela was happy too that she finished her race.

Learning: Every person teaches you a lesson in life either good or bad. There is definitely something good to learn from each one of them. Keep learning and growing. Never underestimate anyone’s ability by looking at his or her disability.

Women on wheels ride for 30 kms – March 5th 2017

After finishing successfully both events, I decided to go for cycling. Meanwhile a surprise came to me that my brother gifted me Author Thema bicycle for my birthday in advance. Gokul Krishna & Krish recommended this cycle from The Bike affair’’. The Bike Affair is a nice store in Kondapur and Jubliee hills that recommends you bicycle according to your height, weight and utility. I got my new cycle and took test ride for 10kms before the event. Women on wheels ride for 30 kms was organised by Hyderabad Bicycle club on March 5th 2017. I was supposed to reach Hyderabad Bicycle club near Biodiversity junction by 4:45 am. Therefore, I decided to ride my bicycle to the start point, as I did not get any auto to carry my cycle. I reached their by 5 am and got my kit and was all set for my ride. Before the race begin, Hyderabad Women randonneurs Vanitha Datla, Brunda Obulam and Sharnya motivated by sharing their experiences. The event flagged off at 6.05 am and all women were on roads with their cycles.  I followed the lane and moved ahead at my own pace. Just like last time I did not stop at any water aid station until 15kms. I got my BIB stamped at 15kms stop, had a banana, drank some water and energy drink and started peddling back to finish line, but at the appa junction I got lost and went ahead one km in wrong direction. Another cyclist also followed me she thought I was on right direction and she ended up in incorrect direction. Instead taking a lane that goes to Gachibowli I took another left, somehow I realised it and came back in correct direction. I saw couple of cyclists back and confirmed that I was on correct track. Heat started picking up and I planned that I will finish this race before 2 hours and kept moving forward.

I reached the finish line and was happy to learn that I was first lady to finish 30 kms cycling among 40 other female cyclists. I was very happy and stood separately to wait for others to finish. I finished my race in 1 hour 50 min. There were 2 categories – 13kms and 30 kms cycling and in both categories top 5 women were given prizes. March 2017 started with a nice surprise for me and I was able to give myself a good advance gift for my birthday.

Learning: Believe in what you do and work hard, success is at your doorstep.

I sincerely thank all my family members for all support for the person I am today. I also want to thank Hyderabad runners group members, RTP runners and other fellow runners and friends who motivated me.

Jan 2017 - Three sucessful acheivements (EIC sessions, Cycling & go heritage Run)

My Love to blog started in 2016 and I am glad that it is still continuing. Here is the first blog of this year 2017. January has been a very busy month as the new CIEE Spring 2017 batch students arrive on-site and we keep them as well as us busy with one-week intense orientation. Apart from organising and helping with many other regular activities I was also responsible to hold the sessions about Embedded Intercultural component (EIC) (which gives American students in depth understanding of their as well as new aka host culture i.e., India & its culture). This is the first time I am teaching/conducting any class or session for CIEE students and no doubt I was very nervous initially but later I went along with the flow. I had spent a lot of time with the material I was provided apart from the 8 week intense online training. This training had not only helped me to understand the diversification and values of another culture but it also helped to know and understand more about my own culture. This is the first achievement of Jan 2017.

Learning no. 1: Unless until you do something, you will not know your capability, so do not get scared to do or learn new things.
In spite of having a busy schedule, I was able to push myself to workout at least half an hour to do any of my favourite activities (run, walk, abs or cycling). I registered for 30kms cycling event organised by Hyderabad bicycling club on 22 Jan 2017 and go heritage run on 29 Jan 2017. I borrowed my neighbours bicycle as mine was not in a condition for long ride and was all set for the event. I took an auto to the start point for the cycling event and the event started 15 min late (was supposed to start at 5:45 am but started at 6 am). Focusing on my experiences, I made my mind that I will not stop at sag points for at least 15 kms, which will save my time. However, I stopped once on the way to sip water from my bottle. By this, I was successful to reach 15kms in an hour and the volunteer stamped my BIB to make sure that I made it to 15kms point and later started cycling back in 5 min. On the way back after covering couple of km, it was damn hot and my paddling speed came down. With lots of huffs & puffs, I was able to ride my bicycle for few more kms. When I was about to reach gachibowli X roads I was unable to paddle more and decided to walk for couple of mins. I thought I would finish my way back within an hour as I finished the first 15kms but that was not the real scenario. Heat started picking up very high and made my energy levels very down. Somehow, I was able to finish the 30kms cycling in 2hrs 20 min. Later I got know that I was also in the top 10 list in women category. That announcement made my day. This is my second achievement of Jan 2017.
30kms cycling done

Learning no. 2: Set your goal and do your best to complete it, but do not lose hopes if you could partially complete it. Feel proud about whatever you achieved to keep motivated.

After the successful ride, I treated myself with awesome Mexican food (at La Mexicana) for the first time on Republic Day with Swetha Kotamraju, Sophia and Kalyan. The same day I was heading off for the outstation field trip with my CIEE students to Hampi for 3 days (27-29 Jan). Coincidently this is the same weekend where go heritage fun run was organized and I registered for 12km run very long back before the trip was finalized. I was happy that I was going to Hampi for both run & trip with students. I thought I would only run if time permits and situation were favourable as I was with a group.

Entire CIEE group departed on 26 Jan by train and reached Hospete around 10:30 am on 27th Jan. We checked into Vijashree resort and our day 1 started at 12 pm and went on late till 9 pm covering few famous sites Monolith Nandi, Mahanavami Dibba, Elephant’s stable, Hampi Bazaar and Lotus mahal till evening. That night we enjoyed rides offered at the resort (Bullock cart ride, horse ride, Camel ride, Mehandi, Rajasthani folk dance etc. Btw forgot to mention that Hampi was 34 to 36 degrees all the three days it was terrible humid and hot. Day 2 (28th Jan)  started with Hike for more than hour to Matanga Hills, Coracle ride, Virupaaksha temple and hazara rama temple and lunch at Clarks Inn and fortunately BIB kit collection was at clarks inn. Later we went to bazar for shopping and headed back to hotel where Dollukunitha Performance (Dollu Kunitha dance, is a major popular drum dance of Karnataka. Accompanied by singing, it provides spectacular variety and complexity of skills. Woven around the presiding deity of Beereshwara or Beeralingeswara, chiefly worshipped by the Kuruba Gowdas of Karnataka and also called Halumathasthas, it presents both entertainment and spiritual edification). We enjoyed the dance and we also danced for more than an hour. Our day ended with delicious Rajasthani food at the resort.
Day 3 (29th Jan) was our last day at Hampi and run day for me. We have to check out the same day morning at 9 am so I have to reach by 9 am by completing my run. I was worried about the transport for the next day morning for the run as it was early in the morning. Luckily Savitha Menon (who was running 21kms) and her husband was staying in the same resort and thankfully they agreed to accommodate me to the start point. My legs were saying hello to me that you have over strained me because of the rigours 2 day walk and hike but I was mentally prepared that I want to do this run as it was my first go heritage run. Run day I met savitha and her husband and we drove to run point at 5:30 am and in later chat came to know that she is also doing her exe- MBA from NMIMS (where I finished mine too recently) and she knows my friends wife too- world is so small. We reached the start point on time 21kms started at 6:45 am and 12 kms started at 7 am. I started my run walk run procedure and crossed 6 kms at 40 min. I was feeling very tired but my main goal was to finish my run.
This run trail was very different of its kind with beautiful scenes, monuments and rocks but very hot weather. I successfully finished 12kms at 1 hour 45 min. After 12 km run I collected my beautiful medal (handmade) and book marker as my finish certificate and rushed to resort as we have to check out. I reached on time back to resort and was able to check out on time. Later we continued our trip to Anegundi, beautiful village close to Hampi which still carries its traditional culture and food. We walked in the village and hiked a little bit to watch beautiful caves which had paintings and having awesome traditional food and sightseeing we reached Hospete railway station to catch our train to Hyderabad. I was a little bit tired but was able to manage walking and hiking in Anegundi

Tiredness is inside the mind than body keep saying to your mind that you can do it and body will automatically do it. This is the 3rd achievement of Jan 2017.

Learning: Every activity is unique in its way and your body and mind acts differently at every event. Push your limits hard to enjoy the sweetness of success. I feel proud that I finished all the three activities successfully this Jan 2017 month. 2017 seems to be more luring to set realistic and unrealistic goals.
